COVID-19 Alert, April 10 : Court Hearing Delays and JPO Video Interviews

First and foremost, we hope you and your families are in good health. We have a couple of updates for you as of the April 10 situation.

1. Courts on Rescheduling of Hearings

Although the courts have not issued an official statement, apparently they are rescheduling deadlines for oral proceedings scheduled in April in response to the government’s declaration of state of emergency. Court justices and staff will be working on a rotating basis for the time being.

If you are concerned about a case pending in the Japanese courts right now, please let us know.

2. The Japan Patent Office (JPO) on Video Conferences

The JPO notified us on April 8 that its patent examiners would conduct interviews by video conference. Please review our recent article below for more information.

It is possible for the applicant to participate in such an interview from abroad.

Feel free to refer back to our alert for April 3 to see what the JPO has announced it will do for missed deadlines in intellectual property prosecution matters.

Regards, the Keisen team
